Kristin Soracco
Manager of Recruiting
As a professional recruiter, I interview hundreds of people every year. 99.9% of people I interview say the most important thing to them in an employer is "job security."
In today's vastly changed employment landscape, what does "job security" really mean? How secure is your job? That depends on what you consider to be true job security. The traditional form of job security of being associated with a specific organization may no longer be a likely path for most of us. Historically, unemployment was associated with poor performance on the job. Today, unemployment is mostly a result of economic changes.
My grandfather worked for the same company his entire career. To him, that was job security. He knew that each day he'd punch the clock and never really worried about layoffs, downsizing, rightsizing, or restructuring. His path up the ladder was predictable based on how long he was there. My mother started her career as a Registered Nurse in a hospital. Then, she became a grade school nurse. Her next career was that of a "domestic engineer." Today, she's a Real Estate "Tycoon." Oddly, she's also never felt a threat of weakened job security, because she's a sponge for knowledge and has always pursued what is available to her.
Ensure your employability. What's the magic formula today for Job Security? Simply put, it's:
Continuing Training + Marketability = Job Security
Many professionals today have embraced the value of continuing education and training for the growth of their career. Your professional contribution is the measure of your true value, according to management.
