Kevin DostalekThe Current State of Automated Unit Testing Tools
Kevin Dostalek - VP, Innovation

This year has seen a huge advancement in the technology available to development teams for the automation of unit tests. This has been primarily driven by an upswing in organizational adoption of Agile development methodologies which by and large demand the use of automated test suites to insure high levels of quality in the face of change. Test Driven Development (TDD) has taken this to the next level as it actually requires the tests be written prior to the code. This article explores many of the traditional challenges surrounding automated unit testing and highlights some of the new tools available to overcome them. The topics covered include:

  • What is an Automated Test Unit?
  • What do I test?
  • How do I write variant tests?
  • What about dependencies?
  • How do I test in real web context?
  • What about business driven acceptance tests?

Brad Lindemann5th Annual Indiana IT Symposium
Brad Lindemann - President/CEO

On Wednesday, September 24 Ambassador Solutions was pleased to sponsor the 5th Annual Indiana IT Symposium hosted by the Indianapolis chapter of the Society of Information Management (SIM). We were particularly pleased to sponsor the session led by one of our most distinguished alumni, Dr. Ron Thieme, VP/CIO of AIT Laboratories. I personally attended the entire day and found each session to be both interesting and informative.

I was struck by two reoccurring themes that have been top-of-mind for IT executives since I entered the industry three decades ago. First, Chief Information Officers (CIO) within many organizations continue to be viewed as second-class "C level" executives in comparison to their "peers". Second, the IT function is too often seen as an expensive black hole that organizations throw money into versus being a strategic impact partner with the operating units. Frankly, I'm surprised and disappointed that we haven't made more progress on both of these fronts over the years. Of the many IT trade organizations, the Society for Information Management (SIM) appears better positioned than most to bring about this much overdue paradigm shift. We need fewer Rodney Dangerfields and more John Chambers coming through the CIO's office.

Ambassador Solutions is committed to helping raise the bar of IT leadership excellence within our primary Central Indiana market. Towards this end, we have chosen to partner closely with SIM, both locally and internationally, to ensure that both organizations are doing all we can to identify and develop top-notch IT executive talent. Last week's Indiana IT Symposium is only one example of this partnership in action. Future such events will be promoted within our abuzz newsletter and by a variety of other means, so stay tuned.
